Living in the countryside has become a positive lifestyle trend. Not only in the United States but also in many countries around the world, people are opting to leave cities in search of more peaceful rural areas. Despite the many differing opinions, this way of life has brought about many beautiful meanings.

In this article, Veque will focus on one aspect: the benefits of rural life for children. This is something that any parent should be concerned about.

1. Living in the countryside helps broaden children’s horizons

This benefit may seem illogical at first. After all, children in cities have better access to education than those in rural areas. So what enables children to broaden their horizons? The answer lies in their living environment.

Specifically, while children in the city grow accustomed to busy streets, schools, and the four walls of their homes, those in the countryside are exposed to nature from an early age, learning about forests, trees, fields, water buffaloes, ponds, and lakes. In contrast, city children often begin their knowledge from images in books.

Living in a spacious environment helps rural children strengthen their memories, trust, and unconditional love. For city children, while they also experience these feelings, it is certainly not as profound. In other words, when children interact with nature through their own eyes, their imagination is nurtured much better than by looking at illustrations or photographs!

The author of this article (when living in the city) once had to buy a book that made animal sounds of pigs, cows, chickens, and sheep for 10 USD. It was an exorbitant price, but it had to be purchased because city children do not have the opportunity for such experiences. Meanwhile, can anyone in the countryside say they buy a book about farm animals for their children?

2. Living in the countryside makes children healthier

Living in the countryside means parents are providing their children with better physical and mental health. Health is the most valuable thing, right?

First, regarding physical health: Children living in rural areas have more space, which allows for more physical activity. Furthermore, the natural environment in the countryside is generally cleaner than in cities, which is very beneficial for the respiratory system, especially for young children. Additionally, rural areas have less pollution from dust and noise, which significantly affects children's development.

Second, regarding mental health: Rural life provides the best environment for developing emotional well-being. It is essential to clarify that this does not mean city children lack emotions, but in cities, relationships are often bound by various other factors. More accurately, living in the countryside allows children’s personalities to develop in the most natural way, without being rigid or dogmatic. Additionally, because most rural residents live close to their relatives and neighbors, children can develop positive emotional bonds.

Moreover, living in the countryside opens up vast skies for children to freely admire clouds, the moon, stars, and the universe—something city children rarely experience due to light pollution, dusty skies, and closely packed buildings.

3. Living in the countryside helps children acquire basic skills

When discussing skills like cooking or gardening, many parents may scoff. In modern life, these skills seem to be neglected. City children now only need to learn computer skills and communication.

However, experts say that as life becomes more modern, children increasingly need to develop the oldest survival skills. For instance, understanding how to grow a tree, cook a simple meal, and take care of themselves in the absence of parents are essential skills.

For children in the countryside, these skills often develop quite naturally. They grow up alongside family members, learning from them through simple tasks. We are not unfamiliar with clips of rural children taking care of younger siblings, cooking, washing clothes, and even performing various other labor-intensive tasks. While children in rural areas may have to work hard, it is undoubtedly beneficial for their development.

In contrast, city children are often not taught these skills. Growing a tree can be challenging, requiring parents to have a large yard. Cooking a meal over a wood fire seems very distant for them.

4. Living in the countryside allows children to have pets

Parents may not know that for children, pets are incredibly important companions. The development of children is significantly influenced by pets. When moving to the countryside, with more space and the presence of chickens, pigs, cats, and dogs, children will benefit greatly. Specifically, there are at least six benefits that pets bring to children:

  • 1. Pets teach children responsibility and help build confidence and self-esteem.

  • 2. Pets enhance non-verbal communication skills.

  • 3. Pets soothe children’s feelings of loneliness.

  • 4. Pets help develop children's reading skills.

  • 5. Pets reduce anxiety about homework and general academic pressure.

  • 6. Pets help connect family members and provide children with a sense of security.

The above are practical benefits to answer the question, “Why is the countryside better for children?” Of course, city life also has its advantages. However, there’s no denying that living close to nature is always beneficial for both children and adults. What about you? What are your reasons for choosing to live in the countryside?
