Select a large pot and drill multiple drainage holes. Asparagus is sensitive to excess water, so more holes are necessary compared to other potted plants.
Ideally, plant 1-2 rootstocks per pot, as they expand rapidly.
Use a mixture of topsoil and organic compost, preferably sandy-loam soil. If unavailable, you can use potting mix.
Fill the pot with 10-20 cm of soil, then place the asparagus rootstock in the center. Cover the roots with 2-5 cm of soil.
Apply a layer of mulch (straw or fresh grass) to retain soil moisture and protect the roots from the sun's heat. Water the plant thoroughly.
After 2-3 months, supplement the soil with aged manure or compost to promote healthy growth and nutrient-rich asparagus spears. Fertilize every 3-4 months.
Ensure the asparagus receives adequate sunlight and moisture but avoid overwatering. Since rooftop railings can get very hot, consider using a shade cloth to regulate the temperature.
Harvest asparagus spears when they reach 15-20 cm in length.
Cut the spears at the base of the plant to encourage new growth.
Avoid harvesting too many spears at once to prevent weakening the plant.
Replenish the mulch layer as needed to maintain soil moisture and regulate temperature.
